21 year-old Alyssa Morrison of Bonner Springs, Kansas reigns as Miss Rodeo Kansas 2011. She was crowned in August in Dodge City, Kansas at the conclusion of a four day pageant held in conjunction with the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo. Alyssa will travel more than 35,000 miles during her reign representing Kansas and the sport of professional rodeo.
A family pastime morphed into a passion for horses and rodeo beginning at the age of six. At 12 years old, Alyssa began competing in rodeo queen pageants, and the dream of one day earning the title of Miss Rodeo Kansas and the opportunity to compete for Miss Rodeo America was born. Alyssa was a 12 year member of the Johnson County 4-H Horse Club where she was Club President as well as the leader of their horse drill team, competitive line dance team, and a trainer for the dog project portion of their horse club. She enjoyed participating in horse quizbowl and hippology, multiple years as a camp counselor at Rock Springs Ranch, Youth Delegate on the Kansas 4-H Horse Action Team, Kansas River Youth Leadership, as well as helping the younger riders in her club. Additionally, Alyssa's involvement in the Kansas State Horse Show Circuit, National Barrel Horse Association, and Kansas Pinto Horse Association enabled her to grow both as a person and a horsewoman.
A senior nursing student at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas, Alyssa expects to graduate summa cum laude in May, 2011 with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. At MNU, Alyssa is a mentor for incoming freshmen, Vice President for MNU's chapter of the Kansas Association of Nursing Students, and was selected for Who's Who among American College Students. Family has played an enormous role in shaping Alyssa into the person she is today - she is the proud daughter of Al and Joyce Morrison, and sister to Kendra. She is grateful for their abounding support and encouragement during her pursuit of this dream, as well as throughout her lifetime.
Alyssa is enthusiastically looking forward to her year as Miss Rodeo Kansas 2011, eager to embrace every opportunity that arises - sharing her passion of rodeo and the western way of life. "To represent Kansas and the Professional Rodeo Cowboy's Association is a once in a lifetime experience. I am honored to to have been selected as an ambassador for the sport of rodeo, to be a role model and mentor for the youth of America - the future of our great country."
